Rusty and Curly Slot
Taking a unique approach to the popular Western genre, Hacksaw Gaming presented the Rusty and Curly slot for the first time in March 2024. The developers here have captured all of the synonymous Western imagery that is often found in this type of online slots, displaying all of the distinctive visual elements in a bright, animated art style. With additional mechanics such as expanding symbols, respins and multipliers also being included, Rusty and Curly has a number of creative aspects to it for us to unpack.
Rusty and Curly Game Background
Positioned inside of a wooden frame, the playgrid in the Rusty and Curly slot has a total of 5-reels, each of which has 4 separate rows across it. With this rather standard layout, Hacksaw has only added the 14 different paylines here, with these working from left to right. Attached to the top of the playtable, a fillable metre can be seen; however, more on this design aspect later on.
On either side of the playgrid, two animated western characters can be seen toting cowboy hats and boots, with these presumably being the titular Rusty and Curly. The backdrop behind all of this truly showcases Hacksaw’s graphical prowess, with a stretching open plain displayed in a vibrant art style filling the playscreen. Beneath the clear blue sky, various steep cliff faces and other canyon outcrops can be seen across the rich green grass, with a distant mountain being visible over the horizon. Compared to games such as the Dead or Alive slot and Western Gold Megaways Hold & Win, the Rusty and Curly slot presents a more colourful take on the typically barren aesthetics featured in Western titles.
Rusty and Curly Slot Symbols
Displayed in a Western font with orange tints to them, the lower valued symbols in the Rusty and Curly slot are made up of your usual card royals from live casino games, something which still fits the theme considering the prevalence of card games in the wild west. The remaining symbols that Hacksaw have included are made up of various pieces of Western imagery, all of which have wooden frames around them.
Lower Value Symbols:
Jack (J)
Queen (Q)
King (K)
Ace (A)
Medium Value Symbols:
Bison Skull
Cowboy Hat
Moonshine
Higher Value Symbols:
Horseshoe
Gold Sheriff Badge
There have been just the two different bonus symbols added into the Rusty and Curly slot as well, with one of these being a wanted poster and the other being a set of playing cards labelled with the letters ‘FS’. The roles of these symbols are wilds and scatters, respectively, and these are common inclusions in many games today.
Rusty and Curly Bonus Features
The wanted poster symbols in the Rusty and Curly slot behave like all other forms of wilds, substituting themselves in for all western and card symbols included in this title. However, should one of these land, they may have a multiplier attached to them like in The Dog House slot, with these being able to range from 2x to 10x. What’s more, if any land, these initially do so with 3 hearts displayed on them, becoming sticky in the process. These wilds remain locked in place for the following respin, with each respin removing a heart at a time. Once all hearts are removed from the wanted poster, the wild no longer remains sticky and disappears in the following spin.
This is not the only nuance tied to the wild symbols and their ability to trigger respins though. If any ‘FS’ scatters appear within the wild respins, these are collected in the fillable metre above the reels in Rusty and Curly. Should 3 of these be collected, this could potentially trigger the ‘Stick to the Plan’ bonus, something which could also occur if 3 of these scatters land in the same base game spin.
Within this Rusty and Curly free spins round, the wild symbols have their multipliers upgraded, with these now ranging from 2x to 100x. Should multiple of these wanted posters be involved in a combination in this bonus, their respective multipliers could be totalled up.
If 4 playing card scatters happen to be collected or land in the same spin, this may trigger the ‘Who Shot The Sheriff' bonus instead. In this, if Rusty and Curly symbols land on the reels, this could potentially see them unload their revolvers, randomly scattering multipliers between 1x and 200x across the playgrid, which may then become sticky. This round initially begins with 12 respins, and after all have finished, any multipliers on screen could be collected.
Rusty and Curly Mobile Play
Although each and every one of Hacksaw’s releases at BoyleSports Games differ in terms of their themes and gameplay features, one thing that is a constant across all of them, including the Rusty and Curly slot, is their device compatibility. No matter the preferred method of play a user may have, the different options are all accommodated thanks to the adaptive framework included in their games, which automatically adapts to the screen size at hand.

From its dynamic wilds that differ from most other ones out there, all the way to the colourful approach to the Western theme, the Rusty and Curly slot is a great example of Hacksaw Gaming’s creativity, with all nuanced aspects in this game pairing up with one another in a seamless fashion.
The Rusty and Curly slot is just one title that makes use of a Wild West aesthetic though, with the bleaker Dead or Alive 2 and Wild Wild West The Great Train Heist also being within the same fan favourite themed collection.
